Pakistan (our ally), sponsored the Taliban who took over Kabul (the capital) Afghanistan in 1994.
Afghanistan is slightly smaller than Texas and right in the middle of its surrounding neighbors - Russia, China, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. ALL of whom resent the presence of the United States in their region.
Afghanistan provides more than 90% of the world's opium. Only 12% of the country is agriculturally available for farming and that produces approximately 6,710 tons of opium which produces about 800 tons of pure, uncut heroin. That's 1,600,000 pounds of pure heroin or 25,000,000 ounces. The current street market price of an ounce of pure heroin is $28,000.00 which added up, totals $700,000,000,000.00 ($700 billion dollars) and is the major source of income for the Taliban.
The average life span of an Afghani is 44.21 years, only 28% are literate and have a school life expectancy of 8 years for men and 4 years for women, the entire legal system is based on mixed civil and Sharia law there are 117 recognized political parties, living standards are among the lowest in the world, unemployment is at 40%, they have NO domestic oil or gas
production, so.......................WHY ARE WE IN AFGHANISTAN?

The 11th Commandment comes to mind - "Where there is a demand, there will always be a supply." Maybe the demand should be the focus.
British Lieut. Colonel Graeme Armour - "Almost all the recruits are illiterate. "They've had no experience at learning," Armour said. "You sit them in a room and try to teach them about police procedures — they start gabbing and knocking about. You talk to them about the rights of women, and they just laugh." A week earlier, five Afghan police officers trained by Armour were murdered in their beds while defending a nearby checkpoint, possibly by other police officers. Their weapons and ammunition were stolen. "We're not sure of the motivation," Armour said. "They may have gone to join the Taliban or sold the guns in the market."
NOTES:
On June 30, 2008, Congress approved a total of about $864 billion for military operations in Afghanistan.
54% of our taxes go for military expenses.
The Iraq "surge" didn't "win" anything in Iraq except to move Al Qaeda to the tribal regions in Pakistan……………………(our "ally?") NOT!
If Obama tries a military "surge" in Afghanistan, Al Qaeda and the Taliban will just move farther into Pakistan or to any of the other 7 countries that are sympathetic neighbors.
Another humorous and naïve belief is that if we don't follow them wherever they go, they'll follow us home……………………like the Vietnamese, North Koreans, Granadians, Panamanians, Yemenis, Somalians, Sudanese, et al. NOT!
One might think that the cheapest, easiest way to stop our "enemies" from coming to the United States, would be to spend those trillions on ON OUR OWN BORDERS!
While our country is suffering (predictably) from the 2.3 trillion dollars we have spent in dethroning Saddam Hussein, the big question looms: Are we willing to spend 100s of billions more on a ridiculous and unwinnable war, while China continues to increase their ownership of everything we AMERICANS built and used to own?
Now, the Russians are contemplating putting some of their long-range bombers in Cuba, their ally, begging the question, "Is this any different than the U.S. putting missiles right next door to Russia (in Poland)?
