Syria - Why are we there?

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend" is a phrase used over 1600 years ago, in India and has since been applied by Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt, among many others to justify the "taking of sides" in world conflicts.

(Associated Press) WASHINGTON - The U.S. is ramping up its presence at Syria’s Turkish border, sending more spies and diplomats to help advise the rebel forces in their mismatched fight against the better armed Syrian regime

(Reuters) - Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri has called on all Muslims to back the rebels in Syria.

CONCLUSION: Al Qaeda and the U.S. are on the same side here! "The enemy of my enemy is my friend!"
So, are we allies with Al Qaeda on this one?
 --------------------------------------------
The U.S. has "taken sides" in a long list of historical debacles with disastrous results like Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden, Idi Amin, Fidel Castro, Shah of Iran (Pahlawi), Muammar Qaddafi, Manuel Noriega and on and on....

Yes, we have historically financed and provided military intervention to ALL these folks...and many more!

With current headlines like:

(Washington Post) - In Cairo, clouds of tear gas enveloped the fortified area around the U.S. Embassy as security forces clashed with protesters for the third straight day.

(Washington Post) - U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three diplomats, killed in Libya.

(Reuters) - Hundreds of Yemeni demonstrators stormed the U.S. embassy in Sanaa, Yemen.

Why don't we let them fight their own battles?

One wonders, "When will we ever learn?"
